Moraga, Ca -
October 6, 2004 - Randolph L. Tom, Dynasty’s founder
and Chairman, spoke on venture capital and corporate finance at a conference
sponsored by the
University of San Francisco School of Management for Chinese
entrepreneurial members studying at
Shanghai Jiao Tong University,
one of China’s most prestigious universities. Invited to participate in the
panel discussion were representatives of some of the country’s most
respected names in venture capital, including
Kleiner Perkins, Hummer Winblad Venture
Partners, IDG Technology
Venture Investment, Partech
International and SBV Venture
Partners. Speakers from the law firms of
Fenwick and West and
Hanson Bridgett also
participated. Mark Cannice, an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and
the Director of the USF
Entrepreneurship Program, and Professor Roger Chen hosted the event at
the Lone Mountain Campus in San Francisco.
Professor Cannice noted, “We were
thrilled to have Randolph provide his insight and guidance as part of our
distinguished venture capital panel group. Randolph’s commentary was
particularly relevant based upon Dynasty's extensive experience in the
region. All participants expressed their deep appreciation for the
knowledge that Randolph and the other panelists shared.”
Speaking to the senior executives of
leading Chinese companies, faculty members and students, the panelists had
been asked to provide information about, among other things, how to select
and manage VC investments, how to evaluate/manage entrepreneurs and how to
identify the common mistakes made by new ventures. Each panelist spoke of
their experience in venture capital and the criteria for investments as well
as services that are required of a venture backed start-up. All
participants spoke of the need for extensive and on-going due diligence by
both the investor group and entrepreneurs seeking backing.
Mr. Tom spoke of Dynasty’s principals’
extensive experience in China and its presence in that country since 2000.
Mr. Tom noted, “Entrepreneurs need to have an excellent reputation and to
develop trustworthy relationships in the US to succeed.” Drawing upon his
personal knowledge of foreign companies seeking to enter the US market and
to access its capital markets, Mr. Tom alerted the audience to the risks
that relate to the potential government influence and interference, to poor
corporate governance and finally, to the doubts about the legal system’s
enforcement of rights and the financial integrity of companies seeking
funding.
Mr. Tom also stated “I am most pleased
to share my insight in advising, investing and creating new ventures for
nearly 30 years with this distinguished group of executives. Dynasty’s
corporate finance experience and ability to navigate the multitude of
Chinese/American business practices is based on many years of hard work and
relationships with Chinese governmental authorities and local partners. All
the panelists provided information that will enable the Chinese
entrepreneurs to address successfully the numerous issues discussed at this
conference. I am honored to have shared a panel with such knowledgeable
venture capitalists and legal professionals at such an important event
sponsored by this outstanding university.”
